Menus and menu cards with allergens

Free extension

Create menu cards and set menus from your recipes, with automatic allergens, ingredients and nutrition, and publish them with a public view, QR code and PDF.

What it is for

If you sell unpacked food (in a café, a bakery with a tasting area, ready meals or catering), you have to give the allergen information for every dish. Keeping an allergen menu up to date by hand every time a recipe changes is easy to forget.

With Menus you build a menu card or a set menu by choosing recipes you already have in Recipok: the allergens, ingredients and nutrition information come automatically from each recipe. You publish it in a public view for the customer's phone (for example, behind a QR code on the table or the counter) and download it as a PDF to print.

Before you start

  • Switch on the extension: in Extensions, look for Menus and click Enable for free. Only the account owner can switch on modules. See Extensions.
  • Have the recipes for the dishes with their allergens and traces checked and, if you are going to show prices, their selling price.
  • Fill in the company details and logo in Configuration › General Data.

Creating a menu card or a set menu

1

Go to the Menus section

In the side menu, Menus › Menu cards or Menus. Click New à la carte menu or New set menu, type the name and click Confirm. The editor opens.

2

General information

Name, Subtitle, Header text and Footer text (for example “VAT included” or “Ask our staff if you have any allergies”). On a menu card, the Global price (optional); on a set menu, the Menu price.

3

Sections and dishes

Click Add section and give it a title (“Starters”, “Cakes”, “Pastries”). Inside it, Add dish and search for the recipe. For each dish you can change the Visible name, add a Description and the Price, and show its Image.

4

Design and style

Background, Text and Accent colours, Typography, Font size, inner margin and Background image.

5

Save and publish

Click Save and switch on Publish. Public view shows you the menu as the customer will see it.

Public view, QR code and PDF

  • Visibility: in the list, each menu has its Allergens, Nutritional facts, Prices and Ingredients switches. Decide what the customer sees without opening the editor.
  • Status: the switch publishes or withdraws the menu instantly.
  • Public view: a page with its own address that looks good on a phone. It shows allergens with icons and, if you switch it on, the nutrition information of each dish. Put that address behind a QR code on the table, the counter or the display case.
  • PDF: the menu card or set menu ready to print. The set menu PDF includes the dishes with their ingredients, allergens and nutrition information.
Tip

The QR code always points to the same address. When you change a recipe, the customer sees the updated menu without you having to print anything new.

Health inspection

For unpacked food you must give information on the 14 allergens. A published allergen menu, in view of the customer, meets that obligation; check that every recipe has its allergens and traces complete. More in Allergen labelling.

Tips

  • Use the Visible name for the commercial name of the dish (“Our house cheesecake”) without changing the recipe name.
  • If your plan has a menu limit, when you reach it you will see the warning You have reached the menu limit of your plan. Delete the ones you do not use or upgrade your plan.
  • For a counter without a screen, combine the menu with display labels.

Frequently asked questions

I cannot see the Menus section in the side menu. Why?
Because it is an extension that has to be switched on. The account owner switches it on for free in Extensions › Menus › Enable for free.
If I change a recipe, do I have to redo the menu?
No. The allergens, ingredients and nutrition of each dish come from its recipe. The public view always shows the current data; the PDF shows the data at the moment you download it.
What is the difference between a menu card and a set menu?
The menu card is your offer with a price per dish (it can have an optional overall price). The set menu is a group of dishes with a single price, like the menu of the day. To plan the menu for each day of the month there is the menu calendar.
Can I hide the menu while I am preparing it?
Yes. As long as you do not switch on Publish, the public view does not show it.
